Meet the Coaches

Jay Poag, Head Coach

Jay has served as the head football coach since 2016 and also held roles as the middle school and high school dean of students. He has been a high school and collegiate athlete as well as coached on the collegiate level for 17 years with stints at North Carolina State, Lenoir Rhyne University, Presbyterian College, and Davidson College. He led CHS to the first ever state appearance in 2018, and the program continues to grow under his leadership. Jay holds a B.A. in History and an M.A. in Recreation Resource Administration from Davidson College. He and his wife, Amy, have three children, Jamie Peck (Graysen), Brandon (’17), and Jacob (’23), and they reside in Dalton.

Hunter Ballew, Assistant Coach

Hunter has served as a high school history teacher, academic coach, and athletic coach since 2015. In addition to football, he serves as a varsity girls’ golf coach. Hunter graduated from Murray County High School and received a B.A. in History from Dalton State College. He and his wife, Sarah, reside in Chatsworth.

Brian Branam, Team Chaplain

Brian has served as team chaplain and as a Bible teacher since 2015. In addition to his roles at CHS, he serves as the lead pastor of Liberty Baptist Church. Brian graduated with a B.S. in Pastoral Studies from Tennessee Temple University and a M.Div. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Shannon, have two daughters, Morgan (’18) and Kiley (’22), and they reside in Chatsworth.

Trent Cummings ('18), Assistant Coach

Trent is an alumnus of CHS, a four-year letterman in football, and began coaching in 2019. He is currently studying business management at Dalton State and is employed by Union Point and Bob’s Towing.

Doug Davis, Assistant Coach

Doug has served as a fifth-grade teacher and coach since 2007. A high school and collegiate athlete, he played at Carrollton High School and the University of West Georgia. Doug holds a B.S. Ed. in Early Childhood Education and a M.Div. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has coached middle and high school football as well as baseball. He and his wife, Kerry, have three children, Nathan (’21), Katelyn (’25), and Emily (’29), and they reside in Dalton.

Brent Howard, Assistant Coach

Brent has served as a strength and conditioning coach and football coach since 2015. He graduated with a B.S. from the University of Georgia, a M.A. in Exercise Science from Tennessee Tech University, and received his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA. Additionally, he is a USA Weightlifting Coach and a Titleist Performance Institute Performance Coach. Brent and his wife, Lauren, have two children, Piper (’32) and Boone.

Chad Jordan, Assistant Coach & Athletic Director

Chad has over 24 years of experience in teaching and coaching, has served as the CHS athletic director since 2014, and has been a member of the CHS coaching staff since 2012. In addition to football, he serves as the head varsity boys’ golf coach. In his seven years as the golf coach, his team has made three appearances in the state tournament and had two top ten finishes in the state. Chad played football and earned a B.A. in Secondary Education from Presbyterian College, an M.Ed. from Tusculum College, and an Ed.S. in Leadership and Administration from Lincoln Memorial University. He and his wife, Beth, have two children, Katie Ray (’19) and Tucker (’21), and they reside in Dalton.

Logan Mathis, Assistant Coach

Logan has served as a community coach since 2015. A former CHS player, Logan is passionate about working with youth. Currently, he works at the Boys and Girls Club and is pursuing his degree.

Steve Sparks, Assistant Coach

Steve has served as a Bible teacher and coach since 2018. Prior to coming to CHS, he taught language arts and special education and coached football, wrestling, baseball, and tennis for 39 years. Steve graduated with a B.S. in Education from Livingston University. He and his wife, Susan, reside in Calhoun.

Chris Thomas, Assistant Coach

Chris has served as a member of the coaching staff since 2015. He is employed by Byer’s Engineering in Atlanta. Chris and his wife, Kelli, have two sons, Cole (’22) and Christian (’22), and they reside in Chatsworth.
