ATHLETIC PROGRAM
Vision and Purpose Statement: Like the Apostle Paul, there is only one thing we envision and purpose for our athletes. That is for them to glorify God by being conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:29; Philippians 3:12-14) Just as our Lord grew in wisdom, in stature and in favor with God and man when He was here on earth, we are designing the CHS athletic program to help our athletes develop physically, spiritually and socially. Objectives: The following objectives are designed to help fulfill the above stated vision and purpose statement:
Code of Ethics:
Academic Eligibility: Participation in sports at CHS is a privilege, therefore eligibility for all student-athletes at CHS is contingent upon the following: A. a “C” average for all enrolled classes B. No “F” in any enrolled class All grades will be checked every 3 weeks beginning at the start of the year. Eligibility to begin playing a fall sport will depend upon successfully meeting requirements at the end of the previous year. If a student is failing one or more classes, they will be placed on probation for 2 weeks. If the grade is not brought up within 2 weeks, the student athlete will be suspended from participation in games for one week (at least one game) and until the grade is passing. In addition GISA eligibility requirements must also be met. If a student-athlete is still not passing after a three-week suspension, a meeting with the coach, teacher(s), principal and parent will be held to discuss further action and possible expulsion from the team. During probation, athletes may attend practices and they must attend games, but they may not dress out during games. If a student is disruptive in class, disrespectful to teachers and students, accumulates multiple demerits and/or participates in other negative behavior issues, the teacher(s) should notify the coach. If a student-athlete continues to participate in negative behavior and/or accumulates 2 detentions, he or she will be placed on probation for one week with the same consequences as academic probation. Physical Exams: Each athlete must have a current physical exam on file at the school. No athlete will be allowed to attend a practice without a current exam on file. The cost of this exam will be the responsibility of the athlete. A current exam will be given within twelve (12) months of the participant’s sport. Failure to comply with this requirement will necessitate suspension of the athlete’s participation until the requirement is met. Uniforms: CHS is not required to provide uniforms for every sport. However, when the athletic budget permits, uniforms will be provided. Parents may be asked to purchase uniforms. All uniforms are subject to the approval of respective principals. Insurance: All CHS sports participants are encouraged to have insurance (either purchased through the school or family insurance). School team participants are required to have proof of insurance on record in the school office. This insurance may also be purchased through the school or as part of a family policy. Discipline: All CHS sports participants are expected to exhibit Christ-like characteristics. Consequently, although this is not expected to be an issue, should a problem arise the participant may be suspended (for a period of time) or expelled completely from the team. A meeting between the Athletic Director, coach, principal and the participant’s parents will determine the need for discipline and potential punishment. Controlling Authority: All decisions regarding intramural and competitive athletics at Christian Heritage School will be recommended to the controlling authority. Any issue may be taken to the board by the appointed administrator for final approval when necessary. Athletic Budget: In the spring each year, each sport will submit a budget to the Athletic Committee. The Athletic Director and the Athletic Committee will develop the athletic budget for the next school year and submit it to the board in the winter of the current year for approval. The budget must adhere to financial policies of the school (i.e. purchase orders, bids, balanced budgets, etc.) Facilities and Equipment: Care of the facilities and equipment is everyone’s responsibility. Purchase of equipment is the responsibility of the Athletic Director. Biblical Resolution: Our priorities are to glorify God, build harmony in the school and avoid conflict. All coaches and athletes are to do as Matthew 18 admonishes – go to an offending brother – “first alone”. Injuries: All paid coaches are required to have Red Cross Safety and First Aid training within two (2) years of employment. All coaches will have first-aid kids for minor injuries. If a major injury occurs, the athlete will be taken by car or ambulance (if necessary) to a proper health care facility. Team Play and Practice: All competitive teams will be comprised of students from grades 5-12. When numbers and available coaches permit, each grade level will have its own team in as many sports as possible. When this is not possible, grades 6-8 will combine and grades 9-12 will combine. Other grade combinations may occur depending upon particular situations. All practice schedules will be developed on an annual basis by the head coach and Athletic Director. No student shall be required to participate in an off season athletic program as a requirement for in season play. Practice time should be limited to no more than two hours of practice and all practices must be completed by 7:00 p.m. at the Elementary and Middle School levels. The Athletic Director and Administrator or Upper School Principal must approve the Upper School practice schedule. Teams may practice on Wednesday, but they must be finished no later than 5:00 p.m. Varsity teams have priority for Wednesday practice. The head coach of that event will determine all player participation in a particular event. A player’s attitude, practice participation and skill level will help determine playing time. In all athletic events, intramural or competitive with fourth grade or below, all participants will play in every game. In the lower grades, it is the design of our athletic program to develop our students through participation and competition. Middle school sports are designed to develop fundamental skills and individual abilities. Most all sports at CHS involve boys and girls, but our sports are not coed. The determination on whether or not a sport is coed will be decided by the Athletic Director and approved by the board. Students who have been absent from school (excused or unexcused) will not be allowed to practice or play in games on the day that they were absent, barring extenuating circumstances. Team Selection: Team selection may be imposed. Team size limits may be imposed by league rules or by the coach of the team. Varsity sports are competitive, therefore those students with the most developed skills or potential to develop appropriate skills will be chosen for the school team. Practice and Games: All who desire to play on a school team make a commitment for the entire season. Quitting in mid-season negatively affects the team and is contrary to Christ’s example of “seeing it through to the end”. Players are expected to be at all practices and games unless they are sick or out of town on a school sponsored field trip. Because of the commitment made, “too much homework” is not a valid reason for missing a game or practice. The Athletic Director will schedule practice times. Conflicts may cause the coach to cancel a scheduled practice. The Athletic Director in conjunction with the opposing team’s director will schedule games. Scheduling of Games and Practices: The games will be scheduled in conjunction with the school calendar to prevent conflicts between school activities and athletic events. Athletic events may be held Monday through Saturday due to the “competition” for games against teams in established leagues and conferences. When playing away games more than sixty (60) miles from Dalton City proper an attempt will be made to schedule them on Friday or Saturday only or non-school nights. Special circumstances may be approved by the school administration. Scheduling of games and practices on school holidays will be avoided (but may occur at the discretion of the Athletic Director). There shall be no more than one (1) game per week on school nights (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) unless special permission is granted by the school administration. Exceptions will be granted for tournaments. No games will be scheduled on Wednesday. Games on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday shall be scheduled to begin no later than 7:00 p.m. There shall be no more than five (5) events (practices and games) per week (Monday through Saturday). For example: 2 games and 3 practices are acceptable. Practice sessions for any sport shall be no longer than two (2) hours. Intramural Sports: This program will be designed to provide development of sports for grades 1-4 and non-competitive (against other schools) sports in grades 5 and up. This program will be designed to be staffed by volunteers. The Athletic Director with the help of the Athletic Committee and the approval of the CHS school board will develop intramurals. The availability of space, volunteers, and the interest of the students will determine the program’s existence from year to year. Coaches: Coaches will first be selected from the staff at CHS. Volunteers will only be sought when the CHS staff cannot fill the coaching positions. However, volunteers to assist head coaches will always be welcomed and encouraged to participate in all intramural and competitive sports. First consideration for coaches and sponsors of extra-curricular activities will be given to members of the CHS staff. Home Schoolers: Home school students may only participate in activities outside of the GISA. An equipment/participation fee for football is $200 per child. Home school students are required to adhere to the rules and policies of Christian Heritage School and may be dismissed from the activity for failure to comply. All home school students must provide a current physical, birth certificate and complete a home school application. Overlapping Sports: Students participating in one sport can practice in another sport only if the coaches agree. If the two sports conflict, the first sport will take precedence over the second sport. The sport begun first will be the primary sport. For example, a student may run cross country in the fall and begin basketball practice in the fall as long as practices are on different days. In this case, a cross country meet would take precedence over basketball practice. Students will not be permitted to practice two sports in one school day without prior parent approval since this schedule could conflict with homework, study time, and family time. Cheerleading: Cheerleading is a seasonal extracurricular sport coordinated with the football and basketball seasons. Cheerleaders will be allowed to participate in other sports. Varsity Letters: All students who are part of a varsity team will receive a letter. Middle School students (6-8) will not be allowed to wear it until 9 th grade. Standards of Student Athletes, Coaches, and Spectators Behavior: Christian Heritage School conducts an intensive interscholastic sports program in the belief that competitive team experiences will contribute significantly to the development of character, mutual support, and school spirit. Sportsmanship is an important part of this training. We expect our coaches, our players, and our students to represent CHS in a manner that is respectful of others on and off the field of play. We also encourage and endorse the enthusiastic support of constituents and friends to uphold the same high standards that we expect of our students. Opposing teams and their fans are to be treated as honored guests. |
