Library Policies
Christian Heritage School provides a library/media center for use by students, staff, and parents. The media center serves grades K- 12.
Location
The media center is located across from the main office, and is accessible to students from the elementary hall, middle school hall, and the high school wing.
Hours of Operation and Schedule
The media center is opened for patron use Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday is a work day in the library for volunteers.
Elementary classes are scheduled to visit the media center once a week for thirty minutes. During this time students checkout or renew materials, research for projects, and enjoy story time. Individual classes can be scheduled for grades 6-12 for research and instruction. Students are welcome to come to the library anytime during the school day when they have permission from a teacher.
Collection
The media center has over 12,000 books, magazines, videos, and reference materials. OPAC, the computerized card catalog, can be accessed by students and teachers in the media center. Concourse is the computerized library system used to manage the library holdings and patron records.
Circulation Policies
Books are circulated as follows:
Grades K-1: Students may check out one book for 1 week.
(After 1st grade starts Accelerated Reading they may get 2 books at that time.)
Grades 2-12: Students may check out a maximum of 4 books. Checkout privileges will be suspended once 4 books are out or there are accumulated fines of $10.
Overdue notices will be sent out periodically in red folders. Fines of .50 cents per week will be charged. Lost books must be replaced by the patron at the replacement price indicated on the item record. Final report cards will be held pending payment of fines or replacement costs.
Library Conduct
A quiet atmosphere of study and reading is required in the library. Parents are urged not to send students to the library as a holding area after school. After school the library is to be for students testing, doing homework, or research. Parents must accompany their children in the library after school.
Students and parents are encouraged to be good stewards of the resources and materials from the CHS library. Materials are to be returned in a timely manner and in good condition.
Library Resources
The Accelerated Reader program is available through the CHS library. Lower school teachers are encouraged to utilize this program to encourage reading development in the elementary grades. Middle and Upper school teachers are encouraged to use the AR program to help guide students to read good quality literature in preparation for higher level thinking skills, vocabulary development, and college preparation.
CHS is pleased to offer the database GALILEO for student use. The website can be found at www.galileo.usg.edu. Galileo is a great resource for all subjects.
