Academics Overview

At CHS our goal is to give students a solid foundation for their educational career as well as for life.   We hope to encourage and strengthen the love for learning that God gives all of us so that our youngest students will continue to grow throughout their years at CHS. The characteristics that best describe our academic program are Christ-centered, challenging, and comprehensive.

Christ-centered.   We believe, first of all, that when God decided to reveal Himself to man, He used three methods to accomplish the task.   He created a world that gave glory to its Creator, He wrote a book that outlined His plan, and He sent His Son to give us an example to follow.   In order to know God more fully we have to study each of the three ways He revealed Himself to us.   So as we study our subjects in school we are studying His Creation and, in essence, His very nature and character.   When we study math we learn about the order of God.   When we study language arts we learn how to communicate with God and with each other.   When we study history we hear “His Story,” written for us.   When we study science we are taking a closer look at who He is and what He is teaching us in Creation.   We study His Book, the Bible, and His Son, Jesus, not only in Bible class, but throughout our day as we take every opportunity to focus on Him and what He would teach us in whatever circumstance we find ourselves.

Challenging.   We offer a curriculum that is challenging.   A main focus of much of the curriculum is helping students develop the ability to consider a problem and outline a plan for solving the problem.   Opportunities for problem solving are often given in language arts, math, science, and history classes on a daily basis. Opportunities to compete in regional spelling bees, creative writing contests, and math contests give students with academic prowess a place to shine.   When a student shows a learning difference, we offer a program of educational therapy designed to address that difference in such a way that they can be successful in the classroom.   This program requires the student to “exercise” his brain and work hard to overcome a weakness.   Because we are challenging we expect every child to work hard at his particular place so he can grow and move on to the next level.   Because we are Christ-centered we help the children recognize that they can do nothing apart from Him, but can “do all things through Christ who gives them strength.”

Comprehensive.   Our mission statement says that we seek to “develop within (students) the character, knowledge, and skills necessary to serve Christ effectively in their day.”   We want our students to have a wide knowledge base from which to act, but we also hope to give them the skills and character to enable them to make wise choices and take appropriate action in their everyday lives.   It is our goal that they will have as the foundation for their character, knowledge, and skills a Biblical world and life view from which to make choices which will lead them to right actions.    From that basis, they can see themselves as Christ’s ambassadors in whatever field He calls them.   Whether they enter the health profession, the legal profession, education, a service profession, a business, the ministry, or whatever life endeavor He calls them to fulfill, they will enter it wholeheartedly as a servant of Christ who is focused on His calling for them.
